About

Physicist from Gallipoli, Italy. General relativity first, quantum materials now.

Background

I was born and raised in Gallipoli, Italy. My love for maths has been a constant as far back as I can remember. With the encouragement of teachers, parents and friends, my interest in science grew — particularly in theoretical physics, chemistry and sustainable science.

In high school I took on several science projects and won a chemistry olympiad for green science together with two peers. That early success pushed me towards Bologna, where I studied theoretical physics. Both my bachelor’s and master’s theses were centred on general relativity, and during my master’s I spent three months at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics finalising my thesis project.

After my master’s I changed field. I moved to Utrecht as a PhD candidate under the supervision of Zeila Zanolli. In our group we explore the electronic and optical properties of materials for the quantum era using first-principles methods, developing new theory and new code along the way. My focus became theoretical spectroscopy and superconductivity.

My time at Utrecht University was transformative, professionally and personally — a great deal of knowledge, wider academic horizons, and a strong network of colleagues and friends.

Outside research I stay active: running and working out are my go-to. I also enjoy video games.
